Binog

Binogs were a species of amphi-mammalians native to the Outer Rim Territories planet Bogano. During the Republic Era, Jedi Master Eno Cordova traveled to the planet and observed artistic depictions of a binog created by the ancient Zeffonian species. In 14 BBY, Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis visited the planet and observed a binog, taking notice of the various depictions of the creature. Years later, Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa of the Alliance to Restore the Republic visited Bogano in order to look for a suitable location for a base, encountering several binogs during their stay.

Biology and appearance

Native to the Outer Rim Territories planet Bogano, binogs were reptilian and amphi-mammalians—a type of creature that exhibited the traits of both amphibians and mammals. They had a lifespan of several thousand years and would only breed once during their lifetime.

Binogs had a long, slender body that was useful for slithering in and out of the various holes of Bogano's landscape. They had brown fur and black eyes. A set of light-blue fins lined the amphi-mammalian's back and its long tail, ending with a tail fin. Each of its six legs had short webbed feet.

Behavior

Binogs spent most of their time lying down and resting. When sensing danger, Binogs moved to a further resting spot.

History

Due to their scarcity of offspring, very few binogs were left in the galaxy during the Republic Era. The ancient Zeffonian species, who had visited Bogano, created various artistic depictions of the creature. One such depiction included a mural in the Binog Mesa region of the planet, which shared its name with the binogs. Around 1014 BBY, a binog was killed near the Bogdo Sinkholes, and years later, its skeleton had been encapsulated within the limestone structure of the planet. Jedi Master Eno Cordova traveled to Bogano in that era, where he set up a workshop and studied the technology crafted by the Zeffo. Cordova also took time to observe the native wildlife, such as the binog. The Jedi Master observed the Zeffo depictions and hypothesized that the creature was a key factor in the Zeffo's decision to create a vault on the planet. Years later, in 14 BBY, Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis journeyed to Bogano on his quest to restore the Jedi Order. While in the Subterranean Refuge, as Kestis remembered the force ability of wall running, a binog watched from above.

While on Bogano, Kestis collected Cordova's observations about the creature. Kestis encountered the binog who watched him ealier residing in the Binog Mesa, and instructed his droid BD-1 to scan the creature. He also found a binog mural made by the Zeffo. After encountering the fossilized binog, the Jedi had BD-1 scan it.

Sometime between 0 ABY and 3 ABY, Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa undertook a mission to Bogano in order to find a potential site for a rebel base. While on the planet, Organa warned Skywalker not to go in the direction of a nearby binog out of fear of waking it from its sleep. Later, when they were attacked by a group of stormtroopers, a binog saved them from a trooper who was going to shoot them.

Binogs first appeared in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment. One binog can be seen resting in the background on Bogano. When the Galactic Empire arrives on Bogano, the binog moves further away from the mainland, but it returns to a close position after the final mission has been completed.

Concept art of the creature was created by Amy Fry. The binog skeleton was created as an intentional homage to the krayt dragon skeleton seen in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The skeleton was implemented to convey the idea that nature is still dangerous even without the influence of the dark side of the Force.
