212th Attack Battalion

The 212th Attack Battalion, also known as the 212th Republic Battalion or simply the 212th Battalion, was a clone trooper battalion in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Serving under the 7th Sky Corps, the battalion was led by Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Marshal Commander Cody. The 212th Recon Division was a special detachment of the battalion, which also consisted of various units including Foxtrot Group and Ghost Company. A full company of Roon's military defense forces was transferred to the 212th during the early days of the Clone Wars, expanding the battalion to include Roonian soldiers for the Battle of Abrion Bridge.

While serving under General Kenobi and Clone Commander Cody, the 212th became known for its successful tactics and involvement in several major engagements, such as the Battle of Christophsis, the Battle of Teth, and the Battle of Ryloth. The 212th also played a role in the Second Battle of Geonosis, where it assisted in the destruction of a newly-constructed droid factory on Geonosis, as well as the capture of Archduke Poggle the Lesser. During the Battle of Umbara, the 212th and the 501st Legion arrested the fallen Jedi General Pong Krell for treason. In an effort to bring an end to the war, the battalion was deployed against the Separatist Droid Army on Utapau, where Kenobi ultimately killed General Grievous.

During the Battle of Utapau, however, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine issued Order 66 to the 212th and the rest of the clone army, ordering them to purge the Jedi Order for treason against the Republic. Programmed for obedience, Commander Cody and his troopers complied with the chancellor's order, but failed in their efforts to kill Kenobi. In the aftermath of the Clone Wars, the 212th was absorbed into the Imperial Military under the newly-established Galactic Empire. As an Imperial stormtrooper battalion, the 212th subjugated the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk under the command of General Kahdah.

High Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Marshal Commander Cody served as commanding officers of the 212th Attack Battalion throughout the duration of the three-year Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In addition, Clone Captain Gregor and Clone Lieutenant Waxer were members of the battalion who held the military rank of an officer.

Aside from General Kenobi, other non-clone officers in the 212th were Commander Mekedrix and Lieutenant Oron, both of whom served in Roon's military defense forces prior to joining the 212th. During the early Imperial Era, the 212th was led by General Kahdah.

Organization

During the Clone Wars, the 212th Attack Battalion was part of the 7th Sky Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic. The 212th was composed of airborne and stealth infantry companies with its clone paratroopers organized under the 2nd Airborne Company. Additionally, the famed Ghost Company was a part of the 212th, as was Lieutenant Waxer's platoon and Captain Gregor's commando Foxtrot Group. The battalion additionally deployed the 212th Recon Division, a special detachment. Mekedrix's company was temporarily transferred to the 212th for additional military support for the Battle of Abrion Bridge. There were also members of a red unit.

Culture and training

Under the leadership of General Kenobi and Clone Commander Cody, the 212th gained a distinguished career in the Republic Military, achieving victories on several planets across the galaxy from Ryloth to Umbara and Utapau. The battalion was renowned particularly for its use of full-frontal assaults and siege breaking tactics, as well as for often serving alongside the elite 501st Legion. The 212th Recon Division was specifically trained to conduct covert missions behind enemy lines.

Equipment and vehicles

The members of the 212th wore the Phase I and Phase II versions of clone trooper armor in turn. Although Cody originally wore armor with yellow markings like other commanders active during the early war, the 212th eventually, like other battalions and units, decorated their standard white armor with unique markings, using orange patterns to denote their affiliation with the 212th Battalion. Although there were still some clones within the unit who retained white armor, Cody and many others adopted the orange markings, with the number of clones taking on the color only growing as the war ground on. Its use special unit markings began with the Phase I armor and carried over to Phase II. The 212th Recon Division used a camouflaged version of the Phase I armor to fulfill its role as a reconnaissance unit.

For weapons, the 212th had access to an array of blasters, including the standard-issue DC-15A blaster carbine and the DC-15A blaster rifle. The battalion's variant units were outfitted with weapons suited to their roles, such as the DC-15LE blaster rifle or the Valken-38x sniper rifle. Although the battalion possessed missile launchers, thermal detonators and other destructive firepower, its troops also carried Electro Magnetic Pulse grenades to minimize destruction to property and loss of life.

All Terrain Reconnaissance Transports were used by the 212th Battalion's splinter group, the 212th Recon Division, which was trained to operate fast and agile walkers behind enemy lines. A variety of other vehicles were also used by the 212th, including All Terrain Tactical Enforcers and Low Altitude Assault Transports.

Troopers

As a battalion of the Grand Army, the 212th's ranks consisted of clone troopers who were bred from the template of Jango Fett and regarded as the "latest evolution in galactic warfare." In addition to standard troopers, the 212th included clone flametroopers, clone trooper officers, clone paratroopers, clone sharpshooters, and heavy weapons clone troopers. Advanced Recon Force Scout Troopers served in the 212th Recon Division. The 212th Battalion's Foxtrot Group was a squad of elite clone commandos including Captain Gregor.

The 212th expanded its ranks to include Roonian soldiers, who served alongside the battalion's clones as supplemental units during the attack on Abrion Bridge. Following the Republic's reorganization as the Galactic Empire, the 212th became an Imperial stormtrooper battalion of the overall Stormtrooper Corps.

Service on Christophsis and Teth

The 212th Battalion successfully defended Christophsis against the Separatist Droid Army.

In 22 BBY, the 212th Attack Battalion was sent to Christophsis, where they fought alongside the 501st Legion's Torrent Company led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and Clone Captain Rex.— During the initial phase of the Battle of Christophsis, the 212th and the 501st attempted to ambush the Separatist Droid Army. The ambush was foiled by Clone Sergeant "Slick," who had secretly betrayed the Republic by becoming a Separatist spy for Asajj Ventress. Slick's actions allowed the Separatists to ambush their would-be ambushers, thereby forcing the Jedi and their clones to retreat to their base. Although Slick was subsequently arrested by Commander Cody and Captain Rex, the renegade clone managed to sabotage the base's gunships and AT-TEs. However, the AV-7 Anti-vehicle Artillery Cannons were saved. Using the cannons, the 212th and the 501st were able to hold out until Jedi General Yoda arrived with reinforcements.

Following General Kenobi's negotiations with Jabba Desilijic Tiure, the 212th went to Teth to assist General Skywalker, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano and Torrent Company in rescuing Jabba's son, Rotta. The 212th were able to rescue the survivors on Teth and picked up General Skywalker and Commander Tano on Tatooine.

Battle of Abrion Bridge

Led by Commander Mekedrix, a company of Roonian soldiers was transferred to the 212th Attack Battalion.

Led by Commander Mekedrix, a company of Roonian soldiers was transferred to the 212th Attack Battalion.

The Battle of Abrion Bridge was the result of information recovered by General Kenobi and Cody prior to the destruction of Rishi Station. Having learned that the Confederacy's War Faction created a mega-ion cannon that was capable of disabling a whole fleet with one blast, the Republic ordered the 212th and 442nd Siege Battalion to acquire the Separatist weapon's schematics on Abrion Major. The was located on the center island of an archipelago chain in the ; a single supply bridge served as the factory's only access point. Therefore, the battalion was divided into two groups to capture both ends of the bridge before converging on the Separatist complex. Due to the scale of the operation, the Republic expanded the 212th Battalion to include a full company of Roonian soldiers as well as their commanding officers, Commander Mekedrix and Lieutenant Oron.

Though reinforced by Roonian soldiers, the 212th suffered high casualties during the Battle of Abrion Bridge.

Though reinforced by Roonian soldiers, the 212th suffered high casualties during the Battle of Abrion Bridge.

Despite Mekedrix's optimism for victory, Kenobi—still adjusting to his new roles as a Jedi Master and a Jedi General—considered Abrion Bridge a "death trap." The 212th was separated into groups and ; the former was led by Kenobi and Cody, while the latter served under Mekedrix and Oron. Kenobi ordered Attack-2 to secure the north side of the bridge while Attack-1 concentrated on the south. Both groups sustained heavy losses while attempting to gain control of the bridge; although Kenobi and Attack-1 achieved the objective of acquiring the plans to the ion cannon, Attack-2 failed to take the north end of Abrion Bridge. As a consequence, hundreds of Separatist forces, including IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tanks, IG-series droids, and Rogue-class Porax-38 starfighters closed in on Kenobi's group from the north.

Kenobi, Mekedrix, and Cody ultimately survived, but the 212th's losses were "countless" according to Mekedrix. By the battle's end, their casualties included Lieutenant Oron and the clone trooper Airo.

During the Battle of Ryloth, the 212th's Ghost Company was sent to Nabat to secure the landing area. Upon their landing, Ghost Company moved into Nabat to take out a battery of five J-1 proton cannons. Despite an attack by a pack of starving gutkurrs, Ghost Company was able to distract the battle droids while General Kenobi destroyed the proton cannons. After General Mace Windu and the rest of the Republic's forces landed, Kenobi and the 212th were able to take the Jixuan desert and secure Ryloth's southern hemisphere.

Losses on Felucia and Sarrish

During the First Battle of Felucia in 21 BBY, the 212th and the 501st were surrounded by battle droids. They were able to hold out until General Plo Koon and the 104th Battalion evacuated them from Felucia.

The second year of the war also saw the 212th and its Foxtrot Group serving on Sarrish. The Battle of Sarrish became one of the Republic's most devastating defeats, during which the 212th sustained heavy casualties. The battalion also lost the members of Foxtrot Group who were reported as missing in action. Captain Gregor managed to survive the battle, but suffered from amnesia while stranded on Abafar.

The second invasion of Geonosis

The 212th was sent, along with the 501st, Jet's battalion, the 41st Elite Corps, and General Ki-Adi-Mundi to retake Geonosis from the Separatists. Kenobi and Cody's force of the 212th were the first to land on Geonosis, while the troops of Skywalker and Mundi were forced to crash-land before reaching their landing zone. The 212th were able to use their gunships and AT-TEs to create a circle to protect them from the Geonosian forces until Skywalker's and Mundi's forces arrived.

After the destruction of the primary droid foundry, a platoon of the 212th accompanied Cody, Skywalker and Kenobi as they searched for General Luminara Unduli and Archduke Poggle the Lesser in the catacombs beneath the Progate Temple. They came under attack by Geonosian zombies under Queen Karina the Great. Together, they were able to rescue Unduli, capture Poggle, and bury the queen alive during their escape.

The hunt for General Grievous

The 212th later assisted Kenobi aboard the Arquitens-class light cruiser Surrogator on the rescue of General Eeth Koth, who was captured by the Separatists prior to the Battle of Saleucami. Kenobi created a plan to lure the general into his starship while Skywalker and General Adi Gallia rescued Koth. When they arrived near Grievous' fleet, all remaining ships started firing with the exception of the Surrogator, baiting Grievous into a trap. Cody and his troopers were able to take Grievous' commando droids, albeit with a few losses, while Kenobi engaged the general himself. However, Grievous managed to escape the fight and ordered the destruction of the Surrogator. Cody and a few troopers engaged Grievous, attempting to keep him in place, but the ship's destruction forced them to let him escape to Saleucami's surface.

The 212th pursued General Grievous to Saleucami, intent on capturing the Separatist general.

Kenobi, now commanding both the 212th and the 501st, landed on the planet and ordered his troops to head to the wreckage of the Separatist ship Grievous used to escape. The 212th inspected the crash site and realized the incident hadn't happened long ago. While the 212th would remain inspecting the area, a few 501st troopers, including Rex, went to patrol a nearby wetland and to warn the rest of the forces if they spotted Grievous. The 212th found a suitable droid for inspection on one of the ship's escape pods and were able to pinpoint the locations of the other pods, one of which was found by nightfall, albeit deserted. The 501st troopers, with the exception of an injured Rex, were summoned to help engage the droids at the last escape pod. They were able to find Grievous and battle his forces. When a shuttle came to rescue the general, Kenobi ordered his AT-TEs to shoot it down, but they were unsuccessful in preventing Grievous' escape.

Several members of the 212th went with Cody, Kenobi, Skywalker and Rex to Lola Sayu. Their mission was to rescue General Even Piell and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin from the Citadel. To enter the planet, the entire rescue team was put under carbon freezing to avoid the life scans of the facility. Once inside, the 501st trooper "Charger" accidentally alerted the enemy forces of the Republic presence through his death. On the way to find Piell, the 212th trooper "Longshot" was killed by an electric field. Upon finding the prisoners, Piell joined Kenobi's group while Tarkin stayed with Skywalker's group.

They were successful in escaping the Citadel and the planet despite the death of General Piell.

Action on Umbara and Kiros

During the Battle of Umbara, the 212th Battalion and the 501st Legion were tricked into fighting each other by the fallen Jedi General Pong Krell.

During the Battle of Umbara, the 212th Battalion and the 501st Legion were tricked into fighting each other by the fallen Jedi General Pong Krell.

The 212th served in the Battle of Umbara along with the 501st, which was temporarily assigned to General Pong Krell when Skywalker was recalled to Coruscant. Its mission was capture the Umbaran capital city while the 501st dealt with the Umbaran Militia. During the battle, Waxer's platoon was informed by General Krell that the Umbarans were disguised as clones, resulting in an accidental skirmish between the 212th and the 501st until Rex stopped the fighting. After Waxer died, the remaining members of his platoon assisted the 501st in arresting Dogma and capturing Krell. Despite Krell's betrayal, the 212th were able to take the capital. The 212th then went to Kiros, where they surrounded the governor's tower and received a message from the Separatist commander, Darts D'Nar.

The final days

The 212th continued to engage the Separatist Droid Army in the final days of the Clone Wars.

Near the end of the war, during the Outer Rim Sieges, the 212th were joined by the 501st in attacking a Separatist stronghold on Yerbana. Each battalion attacked one side of a bridge. Neither group could find the tactical droid, and the 212th was suffering heavy casualties. General Kenobi saved Cody from an explosive, and he along with the surviving troops took cover. At that time, the 501st arrived, having finished their side of the battle. With a successful distraction, Anakin made the tactical droid show up and destroyed it, allowing both the 501st and 212th to advance towards the enemy troops, winning the battle.

The 212th fought in the Battle of Utapau, where General Kenobi sought to end the war by destroying General Grievous.

Later, the 212th took part in the Battle of Utapau, in order to try to defeat General Grievous once and for all. General Kenobi went to Utapau in advance to confront Grievous and allow his battalion to surprise attack the enemy forces. The plan was successful, and Kenobi was able to kill Grievous. However, it was not long before the Great Jedi Purge began and Commander Cody received Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who declared that every Jedi was guilty of treason. Cody obeyed the chancellor by ordering an AT-TE to fire upon their Jedi General, Obi-Wan Kenobi, though he survived falling a great distance, and evaded probes sent by the clones for confirmation of death.

The occupation of Utapau

The 212th seized control of Utapau, subjugating its population while the Republic was reformed into the Galactic Empire.

With High-Altitude Entry Transport-221s and gunships supporting Cody's clone troopers as they arrested the Pau'ans they suddenly deemed to be enemies, the inhabitants of Utapau experienced one of the most bitter reversals of the Clone Wars; the clone troopers turned against them in the wake of Order 66, their liberation from Separatist control replaced by another military occupation that began during the transitional period between the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire. After securing control over the planet, the 212th proceeded to arrest members of the Utapaun resistance along with Port Administrator Tion Medon.

The subjugation of Kashyyyk

The 212th was involved in the Empire's efforts to pacify and enslave the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk.

The 212th remained active in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, serving as an Imperial battalion in the Stormtrooper Corps under General Kahdah. Around 19 BBY, Commander Cody and the 212th oversaw the pacification of Kashyyyk and the enslavement of the planet's Wookiee population. The battalion saw further action on Kashyyyk when the Wookiees attempted to overthrow the Imperial Military's occupation of their homeworld. Following the suppression of the Wookiee revolt, the 212th's actions were reported in the HoloNet News by the journalist Alton Kastle, who claimed that Kahdah bravely led his battalion to victory over the Wookiees of Kashyyyk.

Shortly after the subsequent occupation, Cody deserted the Empire after questioning if the Empire was truly on the side of peace.

Legacy

Kenobi became a hunted fugitive after surviving the 212th Attack Battalion's unsuccessful execution of Order 66.

Kenobi became a hunted fugitive after surviving the 212th Attack Battalion's unsuccessful execution of Order 66.

Despite Commander Cody's efforts to find Kenobi after his attempt to kill him, the Jedi General was presumed dead by his clone troopers after they failed to locate him on Utapau. The fall of the Jedi Order and the Empire's rise to power forced the remaining Jedi into exile, including Kenobi who was hunted by his fallen apprentice, the Sith Lord Darth Vader and a group of Jedi hunters known as the Inquisitorius.

Behind the scenes

The 212th Attack Battalion was identified as the "212th Legion" on the Databank for Commander Cody.
