All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport

The All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport (AT-RT), also known as the All Terrain Recon Transport, or the Republic scout walker, was a model of recon walker manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards which saw extensive use during the Clone Wars by Advanced Recon Force Scout Troopers of the Galactic Republic. It was the precursor to the All Terrain Scout Transport. During the Galactic Civil War, these walkers were adopted by both the Galactic Empire, who used Scout troopers to man the vehicles, and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, who upgraded them to compete with the advancements of the Empire.

The AT-RT's were usually used for a variety of missions including ground support, police support, civil defense, and post-battle cleanup efforts. They occasionally took up position on the front lines of ground battles when difficult terrain prevented the use of larger vehicles.

Manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards for usage by the Galactic Republic, the All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport was a small, lightweight, one-seat, 2.9 meter long and 3.45 meter tall walker of the All-terrain vehicle line used by the Grand Army of the Republic for reconnaissance, forward control, escort, and light strike duties. Piloted by a single clone trooper, the AT-RT granted both high mobility and tactical flexibility to scout platoons. It featured a powerful encrypted communications system, a small, but sophisticated sensor package, and a sound baffling system to assist in stealth operations. The AT-RT cost between 8,000 to 20,000 credits.

For combat, the AT-RT mounted a chin-mounted Maad 38 laser cannon in its forward hull, which gave the vehicle anti-personnel and light-armor capabilities and provided the pilot with enough firepower for nearly any mission. However, the forward-mounted blaster could be switched out for a retrofitted chin-mounted flamethrower or a retrofitted Z-6 rotary blaster cannon, while also wielding a mortar launcher. The walker also boasted a maximum speed of 75 kilometers per hour and could carry up to 100 kilograms.

AT-RT walkers were used by the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the war. During the Battle of Christophsis, clones rode AT-RTs to fight off Whorm Loathsom's droid army. During the Battle of Ryloth, Lightning Squadron rode AT-RTs alongside the Twi'lek Resistance, who rode their own blurrg mounts, to liberate the capital city of Lessu.

During the Battle of Umbara, Republic gunships deployed the walkers, which were used by the 501st Legion to combat the Umbaran Militia throughout the lengthy campaign. During the battle on Kiros, 501st and 212th Attack Battalion clones rode throughout the city to attack the droids, and Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano rode them to chase after the Zygerrian enslaver Darts D'Nar when he fled the city. Near the end of the Clone Wars, 41st Elite Corps clone troopers used them at the Battle of Kashyyyk.

AT-RTs continued to be fielded by the Galactic Empire, being driven by scout troopers. They could be deployed by an All Terrain Anti Aircraft. A group of scout troopers utilized at least two AT-RTs on Mygeeto, where they battled a Rebel group known as the Plasma Devils.

The Alliance to Restore the Republic, particularly the Tatooine rebel cell, used modified AT-RTs.

The Alliance to Restore the Republic also modified some AT-RT's to have a chin-mounted flamethrower, as well as modifying others to have a chin-mounted Z-6 rotary blaster cannon.

War renewed

In 34 ABY, the First Order also made use of the walkers. They were part of the deployment on Vodran when J-Squadron was captured.

Behind the scenes

The All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport first appeared in the 2005 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, and was later identified in Collapse of the Republic, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products.
