Parwan Nutricake

Parwan Nutricakes were protein-packed vegetarian nutricakes. While visiting Takodana Castle, the Parwan bounty hunter Derrown taught the cakes' recipe to the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs in exchange for the latter making him a month's supply of them. In 34 ABY, Tuggs published a recipe for the nutricakes in his cookbookThe Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook—which contained several favorite dishes of his that he served in his restaurant Tuggs' Grub on Outer Rim planet Batuu.

Description

Parwan Nutricakes were golden brown, battered, disc-shaped savory cakes that could be consumed by Parwans and Artiodacs. The protein-packed vegetarian nutricakes partially shared their name with the Parwan species, natives of the planet Parwa. The cakes served as a component of the Felucian Garden Spread dish and could be served with dipping sauces.

Derrown considered Parwan Nutricakes one of his favorites.

The nutricakes were a favorite of the Parwan Derrown, a bounty hunter active by the time of the Clone Wars. While visiting the pirate queen Maz Kanata's Takodana Castle, Derrown asked her chef—the Artiodac Strono Tuggs—for a month's supply of the nutricakes and taught him the recipe. Though Tuggs often felt Kanata's patrons were dangerous beings, he appreciated their professionalism and frequently catered to special requests. After making the Parwan Nutricakes, the Artiodac found them tasty enough to keep a stash for himself.

After Kanata's castle was destroyed in 34 ABY, Tuggs started his mobile restaurant, Tuggs' Grub, which he often brought to Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo on the Outer Rim planet Batuu. He served his favorite dishes and published recipes from his menu in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook—including the recipe for Parwan Nutricakes—for which he gave serving recommendations. Around the same time, Tuggs included his cookbook's Parwan Nutricake recipe in a small pamphlet of recipes meant to help a Batuu visitor learn more about the planet.

Parwan Nutricakes were introduced to the current Star Wars canon in the 2019 recipe book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Marc Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. The out-of-universe recipe is made with chickpeas as a protein source, along with garlic, cumin, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, egg, flour, and olive oil. The recipe for Parwan Nutricakes was one of Monroe-Cassel's favorites from the collection.

Although the name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, Parwan nutricake was a different type of food. Ortolan musician Max Rebo mentioned that he hoped to eat spiced Parwan nutricake in "And the Band Played On: The Band's Tale," a short story by Kevin J. Anderson that was published in the 1996 anthology Tales from Jabba's Palace. In the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, the Parwan nutricake item was depicted as a loaf-like cake with filling and described as a "healthy bread-like dessert," unlike the current canon's savory, disc-shaped cakes.
