Yobshrimp Noodle Salad

Yobshrimp Noodle Salad, also known as Surabat Shrimp and Noodle Salad, was a salad comprised of chilled yobshrimp, cold noodles, and vegetables. The dish was created by the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs to highlight the freshness of yobshrimp. He had attempted to fish for them on their homeworld of Naboo, bringing him into conflict with the Gungan species and coming to an agreement with them to purchase the shrimp.

Afterward, Tuggs transported live yobshrimp via his modified transport that housed his mobile restaurant, Tuggs' Grub. In 34 ABY, he served Yobshrimp Noodle Salad when he was the visiting chef at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.

Description

Yobshrimp Noodle Salad was a salad that contained chilled, marinated yobshrimp; cold, beige-colored noodles, which could be opaque or semi-transparent; and colorful vegetables. The dish was suitable for human and Artiodac consumption and could be served in adult- and youngling-sized portions.

History

When Strono Tuggs fished for yobshrimp in Lake Paonga without permission, the Gungans brought him into their underwater city, Otoh Gunga.

When Strono Tuggs fished for yobshrimp in Lake Paonga without permission, the Gungans brought him into their underwater city, Otoh Gunga.

The noodle salad was created by the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs to highlight the freshness of yobshrimp, a decapod species that was native to the waters of the planet Naboo in the Mid Rim. Fishing for the sea creatures could be dangerous; in Naboo's deep underwater Abyss, the fisher risked being eaten by colo claw fish or an opee sea killer.

To avoid the dangers of the Abyss, Tuggs originally fished for yobshrimp by himself using traps in Lake Paonga, a body of water that housed Gungans and their most important city, Otoh Gunga, within its depths. The chef failed to get permission from the Boss of the Gungans, a move he would later characterize as a "rookie mistake." The Gungans brought Tuggs into Otoh Gunga, where they established that he was not a threat and then hospitably offered him a drink of Paonga Fresca. After that incident, Tuggs established a purchasing agreement with a Gungan who supplied him with yobshrimp at a reasonable price.

Tuggs used his modified starship, in which he had cargo pods with built-in life support systems, to transport live yobshrimp and other fresh ingredients that he served at his mobile restaurant, Tuggs' Grub. In 34 ABY, Tuggs' Grub was often stationed at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, which brought the dish to that location.

That same year, Tuggs published his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which included his Yobshrimp Noodle Salad recipe, along with anecedotes about yobshrimp and the Gungans. Explorer Eloc Throno, author of the Traveler's Guide to Batuu, ate the dish on Batuu at a time when it was named Surabat Shrimp and Noodle Salad, sharing its name with the Surabat vicinity. The chilled salad was one of Throno's favorites to eat on a warm day.

Yobshrimp Noodle Salad has been served in the real world at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in the themed land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. It was officially announced to the public on February 27, 2019 via articles on StarWars.com and D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, and it debuted for guests to purchase when the land opened in Disneyland Park on May 31 and Disney's Hollywood Studios on August 29. The menu's description reads, "Chilled Shrimp, Marinated Noodles, Vegetables, Cilantro." The name of the dish lasted at both parks through September, but in October 2019, the dish was part of a wave of name changes at Disney's Hollywood Studios that ultimately resulted in renaming it at that location to Surabat Shrimp and Noodle Salad. As the availability of the dish at the theme parks has fluctuated with real world events, this article has not described its status on specific dates.

An out-of-universe recipe for Yobshrimp Noodle Salad was published in the cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak and published on November 5, 2019. Prior to the day of cooking, a vinaigrette is made with low-sodium soy sauce, lime juice, sugar, a minced clove of garlic, hot sauce, and xanthum gum. After marinating overnight, the vinagrette is tossed with cold vermicelli rice noodles and cooked shrimp, along with slices of the following: bell pepper, carrots, wood ear mushrooms, and red onion. The dish is then topped with minced cilantro and a pinch of salt before serving.

The reference book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu, written by Cole Horton and published on July 21, 2020, mentioned that Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo had a meal called Surabat Shrimp and Noodle Salad. As this name matches the renaming of the dish at Disney's Hollywood Studios, this appears to be another name for the in-universe dish.

The non-canon The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu, an expansion for the video game The Sims 4, was released on September 8, 2020. It includes Yobshrimp Noodle Salad as a meal sold to the player's Sims at the Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo vendor in the Black Spire Outpost neighborhood, priced at sixteen credits for a single serving. Upon eating the meal for the first time, the Sim automatically learns the recipe and can prepare it with stoves in their home neighborhood.
