A starship hailing from the region of the galaxy beyond the Unknown Regions known as "Lesser Space" carried Galactic Republic technology and held human survivors by 19 BBY. The vessel was seized by a task force of the Chiss Ascendancy's Chaf family.
Chiss Syndic Mitth'ras'safis and a human female pilot managed to steal the starship from the task force, but were unable to bring it to a refuge world from which they could give the Republic technology to the Ascendancy's Defense Hierarchy Council, as the ship was too damaged to reach its destination. The syndic and the human subsequently crashed the vessel into a valley, killing themselves in the process but saving the humans aboard the starship.

By 19 BBY, the starship, which carried human survivors, was involved in the Vagaari pirate operations, a conflict between the forces of the Chiss Ascendancy nation and the Vagaari pirates. A task force of the Ascendancy's Chaf family obtained the vessel, and the Chiss syndic Mitth'ras'safis, core name "Thrass," and a human female pilot stole the starship. Thrass and the woman spirited the ship away in hopes of bringing it to a refuge world from which they could offer the Republic technology to the Ascendancy's Defense Hierarchy Council; however, their plan did not go as planned. The ship was far too damaged to reach the world, and the pair discovered the human survivors aboard the vessel.
They were forced to crash the ship and kill themselves in the process, as their chosen crash site, a stone-filled valley, dictated that if Thrass and the human survived, the survivors would die. The pilot offered to help the syndic escape, but the pair realized that while the woman helped him get to the small starship aboard the Lesser Space starship, the latter vessel's systems would self-destruct.
As he could not bring glory to his family, the Mitth family, or the Ascendancy, Thrass decided not to bring destruction. He believed that if one of the Chiss families obtained the Republic technology, the Chiss balance of power would be damaged significantly, and crashed it to prevent that, resulting in his and the human pilot's death. Around 19 BBY, the Hierarchy Council and the Chiss Aristocra assembly were unhappy with Thrass's brother, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, for losing the technology within the spacecraft and his brother Thrass.

In the current Star Wars canon, the starship was first mentioned in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first volume of the Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy written by Timothy Zahn. It later made an appearance in a flashbacks sequence in the trilogy's third installment, Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, which was published in 2021.
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the ship, called Outbound Flight, was first mentioned in Zahn's 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, the first volume of his Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy. It first appeared in Zahn's 2004 novel Survivor's Quest as its wreckage and was the focus of the author's 2006 eponymous novel, which told the starship's original story. Elements of the ship's history in canon, including parts of dialogue of Syndic Mitth'ras'safis and Human Jedi Knight Lorana Jinzler, closely resemble those presented in Outbound Flight.
