The Vagaari pirates were first mentioned in canon in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising by Timothy Zahn. They share many similarities to the Vagaari Empire of Zahn's Star Wars Legends novels, including the 2004 novel Survivor's Quest in which they first appeared. The canon Vagaari pirate operations mirror the events of the Outbound Flight Project from Zahn's 2006 Legends novel Outbound Flight.
