Plot summary

In the year 22 BBY, a Galactic Republic information bunker has become the target of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. A force of Confederate B1-Series battle droids and B2 super battle droids under the command of a tactical droid marches toward the bunker, where the tactical droid hopes to obtain important Republic files. However, unbeknownst to the droid, the bunker is actually an imitation set up as a trap by Jedi General Aayla Secura and a squad of clone troopers commanded by Commander Bly.

The clones rejoin Aayla Secura inside the information bunker.

The clones rejoin Aayla Secura inside the information bunker.

As the droids approach the fake bunker through a canyon, Bly and the clones watch them from above. Bly then contacts Secura and informs her that the enemy has taken the bait. The droids soon blast into the bunker, only to discover that its data banks are empty. At this moment, using their jetpacks to land in the canyon, the clone troopers launch an attack on the battle droids. Bly orders troopers Barr and Galle to take out the B2 super battle droids and gives an order to trooper Inc to use EMP grenades on the remaining droid forces.

Meanwhile, the tactical droid retreats inside the bunker, where it is confronted by Secura. Surprised to see the Jedi, the droid does not have time to trigger cyberostasis in order to protect the information in its memory banks before Secura uses her lightsaber to decapitate her enemy. As a result of the droid's confusion, the information is left intact. After the battle, the clones rejoin Secura inside the bunker, and Secura commends them on their efforts in successfully completing the mission. Secura then decides to take the tactical droid's severed head to her cruiser to perform a robolobotomy and find out if the droid possessed any important data.

Development

The Clone Wars: Headgames is a six-page webcomic in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars webcomic series, which ties into the television series of the same name. Chronologically, the comic takes place prior to "Jedi Crash," an episode in the first season of the television series. Within the overall publication order of the webcomic series, The Clone Wars: Headgames is preceded by The Clone Wars: Switch and is followed by The Clone Wars: Neighbors.

The Star Wars: Tales from the Clone Wars trade paperback collected the first-season tie-in webcomics, including The Clone Wars: Headgames.

The comic was posted on StarWars.com on January 15, 2009, and it was written by Pablo Hidalgo, illustrated by Tom Hodges, and lettered by Grant Gould. Special thanks were also given to Sue Rostoni, the Executive Editor at Lucas Licensing; Leland Chee, Keeper of the Holocron continuity database; and Dave Filoni, the supervising director of the television series.

In 2010, The Clone Wars: Headgames—alongside the rest of the webcomics that accompanied the television series' first season—was collected in a trade paperback titled Star Wars: Tales from The Clone Wars Webcomic Collection Season 1, published in collaboration by Dreams and Visions Press and Dark Horse Comics. It was available at the Celebration V fan event in August of that year, and for a limited time afterward.

Following a declaration made by Lucasfilm Ltd. on April 25, 2014, the comic is now considered to be a part of the non-canon Star Wars Legends continuity.

As an Easter egg, the text in Aurebesh in the bottom right corner of Bly's electrobinoculars view encourages the reader to watch The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.

Continuity

The Clone Wars: Headgames introduces the tactical droid model—which would appear in future episodes of the show—and depicts the obtaining of the droid's head by Aayla Secura and Commander Bly, both of whom would later be featured in "Jedi Crash."
