Ronto Wrap

The Ronto Wrap was a sandwich made from ronto meat served in a flat piece of bread called a ronto wrapper and topped with slaw and Clutch Sauce or emulsauce. In 229 BBY, the pirate Zyle Keem stuffed Ronto Wraps into their leather duster, and around 1 ABY, while aboard the Halcyon starcruiser, the Imperial General Kardan consumed a platter of food that contained three of the wraps.

In 34 ABY, they were available at podracing fanatic Bakkar's Ronto Roasters in Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu and were cooked by the pitmaster droid 8D-J8. The same year, the mechanic Salju and Resistance spy Vi Moradi both ordered Ronto Wraps while the former gave the latter a tour of the outpost. 8D-J8 once offered a Ronto Wrap to the Clawdite Remex Io, who turned it down, and a droid repair technician consumed some of the wraps after saving the bartender Seezelslak from a First Order re-education facility.

Strono Tuggs' version of the Ronto Wrap

The Ronto Wrap was the best-selling sandwich available at Ronto Roasters, a restaurant owned by the podracing fanatic Bakkar, in Black Spire Outpost on the Outer Rim planet Batuu. It contained two tender cuts of ronto meat that had the tough skin removed, and the meat was then cooked by the pitmaster droid 8D-J8 on a grill heated by a podracer engine. The two cuts, a link along with chopped meat underneath, were topped with slaw and Clutch Sauce, Bakkar's signature smoky and spicy sauce, and the filling was served in a flatbread called a ronto wrapper. Bakkar also included a special spice blend that was a family secret. There was also a breakfast version of the dish called the Ronto Morning Wrap and a meat-free Ronto-less Garden Wrap. All three versions were safe for humans to consume, and Ronto Wraps themselves were edible to Zabraks and Artiodacs.

Strono Tuggs, the chef at the neighboring Tuggs' Grub mobile eatery parked in Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, also had a version of the Ronto Wrap. The Artiodac willingly admitted that his version was not as good as Bakkar's, but he claimed that the difference was hardly noticeable if the wrap was smothered in enough emulsauce.

History

In 229 BBY, while on a Nihil ship patrolling the Stormwall hyperspace barrier, the fourteen-year-old pirate Zyle Keem stuffed packaged Ronto Wraps into their leather duster to take to the planet Valo. Around 1 ABY, during the Galactic Civil War, General Kardan of the Galactic Empire gorged on a platter that included three Ronto Wraps while aboard the commandeered pleasure starcruiser known as the Halcyon.

In 34 ABY, during the war between the First Order and the Resistance, the local mechanic Salju took the Resistance spy Vi Moradi on a tour of Black Spire Outpost, during which they stopped at Ronto Roasters and each ordered a Ronto Wrap. After the arrival of the First Order on Batuu, 8D-J8, along with an astromech droid, offered a Ronto Wrap to the Clawdite Remex Io. Despite the droid claiming they were both juicy and the best in the quadrant, the criminal was unimpressed and declined the offer.

During the First Order's occupation of Batuu in the same year, Tuggs included his personal recipe for the Ronto Wrap in his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. In that time, the adventurer Eloc Throno mentioned the Ronto Wrap in his book Traveler's Guide to Batuu. Also during the occupation, a droid repair technician consumed Ronto Wraps after rescuing the bartender Seezelslak from a First Order re-education facility.

The Ronto Wrap was created for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

The Ronto Wrap was announced on February 27, 2019, as part of a large press release on upcoming dining offerings for the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge themed land. Its first appearance was in the first issue of the Marvel Comics comic-book miniseries Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, which was written by Ethan Sacks, penciled by Will Sliney, and published on April 24 of that year. The dish debuted in the real-world Ronto Roasters restaurant at Disneyland when it opened on May 31. The official menu description for the Ronto Wrap is as follows: "Roasted Pork, Grilled Pork Sausage, Peppercorn Sauce, tangy Slaw, wrapped in Pita."

The out-of-universe recipe for the dish was released in the cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak, which was released on November 5, 2019. The recipe calls for vegetable oil, diced yellow onion, ground pork, chorizo sausage with the casings removed, brown sugar, tomato purée, salt, pepper, guacamole, and ronto wrappers, which the book includes a separate recipe for. According to Monroe-Cassel, the recipe in the cookbook varies from the recipe found in the theme parks due to accommodations made for residential kitchens. In the video game Star Wars: Squadrons, released on October 2, 2020, the player's character occasionally mentions craving a Ronto Wrap at the start of a multiplayer match if the player is using the "Rookie B" voice.

The September 8, 2020 non-canon video game expansion for The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu included Ronto Wraps as purchased from a vendor in group or single servings and used to fulfill the player's Sims' hunger needs. Ronto Wraps also appeared in two flashbacks depicting stories told to Resistance general Finn in the 2022 Disney+ animated special LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation. In a flashback on the planet Coruscant in 18 BBY, Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader, a Trandoshan, and a Jawa celebrated the Imperial Empire Day holiday by acquiring some Ronto Wraps to consume. When their festivities angered Emperor Palpatine, Vader was prompted to throw away his wrap.

In a flashback on the moon Endor in 15 ABY, the Twi'lek Mahlnor had one of the wraps while she visited the Admiral Snack Bar establishment on the moon. While there, she teased the Mon Calamari Gial Ackbar about not wanting to refer to a Ronto Wrap as a "snack." Later, Solo, his new acquaintance Sidero, and Mahlnor sat at the bar's tables and were served some Ronto Wraps with blue milk. Additionally, Ronto Wraps are mentioned in the full version of the song "Scarif Beach Party," portions of which are played in LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation. The song was sung by "Weird Al" Yankovic—an artist who voiced the musician Vic Vankoh during a flashback on the planet Scarif—and released the same day as the animated special.
