Goneril

Goneril was a First Order Navy adjutant who served under Captain Moden Canady aboard the Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought Fulminatrix during the First Order-Resistance War. In 34 ABY, the dreadnought traveled to the planet D'Qar in order to destroy the Resistance base situated there. Before it could do so, however, a Resistance X-wing starfighter piloted by Commander Poe Dameron began destroying the Fulminatrixs dorsal surface cannons. Goneril proclaimed to Canady that the starfighter had no chance of penetrating the dreadnought's armor, leading the annoyed captain to retort that it was not, in fact, the attacker's goal.

After the Fulminatrix eventually fired upon the base, destroying it, Goneril was transfixed by the sight of the resultant destruction on the planet's surface. The adjutant subsequently reported to Canady on the approach of Resistance bombers as well as on the progress of the re-charge of the Fulminatrixs orbital auto-cannons for another attack, aimed at the Resistance's main capital ship. Shortly thereafter, however, a successful bombing run by the last remaining Resistance bomber led to the destruction of the dreadnought and the death of all personnel aboard.

Goneril served as an adjutant in the naval forces of the First Order during the war between that faction and the Resistance. In 34 ABY, they were stationed aboard the Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought Fulminatrix, which accompanied three Resurgent-class Star Destroyers in traveling to the Outer Rim Territories' Ileenium system in order to destroy the Resistance base on the planet D'Qar there. After the Fulminatrix arrived over the planet, however, Resistance Commander Poe Dameron, piloting the T-70 X-wing starfighter Black One, distracted the First Order warships from opening fire on the base. Dameron then commenced an attack run on the Fulminatrix, blowing up its dorsal surface cannons in order to render the dreadnought defenseless against the Resistance's MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 heavy bombers.

After the Black One flew past the Fulminatrixs bridge in order to carry out another pass at the dreadnought's cannons, the First Order's General Armitage Hux holographically contacted the starship's captain, Moden Canady, and angrily inquired as to why the Fulminatrix had not yet destroyed the attacking starfighter. Goneril observed both Hux and Canady during the conversation. After the captain had scornfully retorted that their own fighters needed to be deployed—an action that Hux had previously forbid—in order to effectively defend against the X-wing, he strode away from the bridge's viewport toward the room's interior. Goneril followed their superior officer, proclaiming that the attacker had no chance of penetrating the Fulminatrixs armor. Canady briefly fantasized about there being an airlock situated nearby—through which he would then shove the adjutant—before icily responding that it was clearing out the dreadnought's surface cannons that was the X-wing's goal, not attempting to penetrate their armor. Goneril reacted with a look of offended incredulity on their face, which Canady would have treasured if not for the dangerous situation their vessel was in.

The captain of the Fulminatrix later gave the order for the ship's orbital auto-cannons to open fire on the Resistance base. He then ordered for the feed of the vessel's orbital imagers to be fed onto a viewscreen. The resultant images depicted a firestorm extending for kilometers away through the planet's jungle from where the base had been destroyed. The sight transfixed Goneril, leading them to standing frozen and staring at the screen with adoration.

Later, while the Resistance bombers were advancing on the Fulminatrix, Goneril notified Canady that the attacking craft would be in range within moments, after which the captain ordered the auto-cannons to be recharged and to target the Resistance's main capital ship, the cruiser Raddus. Warrant Officer Suday Bascus subsequently reported that the auto-cannons had been aimed at their new target, with Goneril adding that forty seconds remained until they would be fully charged. The latter officer was standing near the console of another crew-member when Canady gave the order to fire at the Raddus; however, at that moment, the last remaining Resistance bomber dropped its payload of proton bombs onto the Fulminatrixs dorsal surface, causing a chain reaction of explosions within the vessel that eventually engulfed its bridge, with everyone aboard the warship perishing as a result.

Personality and traits

Goneril was a human with light skin and dark eyes. They were confident in the ability of the armor of the Fulminatrix to withstand any attack by a T-70 X-wing starfighter, and the sight of the destruction wrought on the surface of D'Qar by the Fulminatrixs orbital auto-cannons transfixed Goneril and inspired adoration in them.

Equipment

Goneril wore a First Order military uniform consisting of a tunic, pants, a belt, boots, and a cap. They carried a single pair of officer rank cylinders on the left side of the chest section of their tunic.

Behind the scenes

Goneril first appeared, albeit unnamed, in the 2017 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. The character is portrayed by Amira Ghazalla and is listed as "Canady's First Order Commander" in the film's credits. Goneril was named in Jason Fry's adult novelization of the film, which was published on March 6, 2018. In the novelization, Goneril observes "disdainfully" the Black One approaching the bridge of the Fulminatrix while delivering their first line, "He'll never penetrate our armor," whereas in the film they say it while following Moden Canady away from the bridge's viewport.

The novelization also erroneously attributes to Goneril a line said by a different bridge crew-member of the Fulminatrix in the film, as does the July 10, 2018 non-canon adaptation William Shakespeare's Jedi the Last: Star Wars Part the Eighth by Ian Doescher. In addition, the latter book has Goneril—identified only as "OFFICER 2"—deliver a line—"Resistance bombers make approach, my captain"— that is an altered version of a line said by Suday Bascus in the film.
