The Dwartii were first mentioned in the reference book Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary, written by Pablo Hidalgo and published on December 17, 2017. When asked on Twitter, Lucasfilm Story Group member Matt Martin said he assumed the book's mention of "the Dwartii" referred to the Four Sages of Dwartii.
