The Bestine system was located in the Inner Rim. It contained the planet Bestine IV, as well as the trading outpost Kestic Station. Located in grid square M-14, the star system was on the path of the Corellian Trade Spine hyperspace route.

The trading outpost Kestic Station was also located on the edge of the star system, in close proximity to Bestine. The Corellian Trade Spine hyperspace route ran through the Bestine system, passing through Bestine IV and several other worlds.
In the waning years of the Galactic Republic, lommite shipments took place from the planet Eriadu to the Core Worlds. During their journey, the ships carrying the ore circled around Bestine in order to reach the Core. At some point during the Imperial Era, Jek Porkins, a trader from Bestine IV, was forced to leave his homeworld and fought against the Galactic Empire as a member of the Rebel Alliance. During the Galactic Civil War in 3 ABY the Rebel Alliance's Twenty-First traveled to Bestine IV as part of the Alliance Fleet's withdrawal from the Mid Rim. Yipsit, a Shahkirin mechanic, grew up on Bestine IV before leaving at some point to join the Resistance in their war against the First Order.
The Bestine system was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2015 digital card trading application Star Wars: Card Trader. The StarWars.com article "Where in the Galaxy Are the Worlds of Star Wars: The Force Awakens?," written by Mark Newbold and published on January 29, 2016, provided the system's first visual depiction.
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Bestine system was first mentioned in Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope, a roleplaying game supplement to West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The book was written by Grant S. Boucher and released in 1989.
