Ben Kenobi's home

Ben Kenobi's home, also known as Obi-Wan's hut, was the home of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who used the alias Ben Kenobi, on Tatooine. Abandoned by its , the hut was located in the remote Jundland Wastes, situated on a bluff surrounded by the Western Dune Sea.

Description

It was located 136 kilometers from the Lars homestead. Created out of , the house was a simple dwelling with one large room divided into a bathroom, a living room and a raised kitchen. It was built on top of a sheltered cave. Kenobi used the cave as a small workshop and a cellar to store food, and spent most of his time in the house above. A moisture vaporator was next to the house. Kenobi spent most of his time walking around the canyons near his house and meditating.

History

Luke Skywalker defends himself against Boba Fett while visiting Kenobi's hut.

Luke Skywalker defends himself against Boba Fett while visiting Kenobi's hut.

Built high on a cliff, the hut was built by mining prospectors from the Core Worlds who thought that Tatooine was rich in mineral wealth. A moisture prospector built it due to its higher-than-average water condensation. The building was eventually abandoned and left empty.

After the fall of the Jedi Order, when he brought the infant Luke Skywalker to live with the Lars family, Kenobi initially lived in a cave near the Lars homestead for ten years. Finding it on its windswept bluff, Kenobi eventually moved from the cave into the small house. He lived there for nine years until the mission to rescue Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, a mission in which Kenobi was killed by Darth Vader. After Kenobi's death, Skywalker returned to the home in order to learn more about the ways of the Jedi. While searching the hut, he was found by Boba Fett, whom Darth Vader had hired to find the pilot who had destroyed the Death Star. They fought, but Skywalker escaped. Sometime later, Vader, accompanied by Doctor Aphra, came to the hut in his search for his son. When they left, Aphra used a Molecular purge bomb to conceal the fact that she and Vader had visited the hut.

Shortly before the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba's Palace, Luke returned to the home and found some essential parts for his new green lightsaber.

Behind the scenes

In the original script of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Ben was described as living in a cave. By the time production started on Episode IV, the location was transplanted into a hut, but there are still blueprint drawings referring to his home as a "cave." The series Obi-Wan Kenobi introduced a cave that was drawn from the original script. Placing Kenobi in a cave and not his hut during the series met several story needs. As established in DK Publishing's Star Wars: Complete Locations map, Kenobi's hut was quite far from the Lars homestead, and the series needed him closer to keep an eye on the farm.
