ABC's first brush with Star Wars came in 1977, with the airing of the one hour special The Making of Star Wars. ABC then broadcast the two Ewok telefilms, Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985), and from 1985 to 1986 it broadcast the animated series Star Wars: Droids and Star Wars: Ewoks. In 2014, ABC hosted a special re-airing of Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion.

In the early 1990s, Bob Iger (then-chairman of ABC) gave the greenlight to George Lucas's series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which aired on the network from 1992 to 1993. In 2005, Iger became CEO of Disney, and it was he who negotiated with Lucas for the company's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm Ltd..

In 2016, the network debuted the first two trailers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In 2020, a special look for season two of The Mandalorian debuted on Monday Night Football, which was cast simultaneously on ESPN and on ABC.
