In 3 ABY, the Galactic Empire invaded the gas mining colony Cloud City, located in the skies of the gas giant Bespin. Baron Administrator Lando Calrissian summoned the Devaronian executive chef Torro Sbazzle to prepare refreshments for Darth Vader and his "guests;" unbeknownst to Sbazzle, Vader was capturing the rebels Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Chewbacca to lure his son, Luke Skywalker, to Bespin. Sbazzle presumed that Vader, like most Imperials, was human and began cooking dishes that his species could consume. As she made dumplings, she considered cutting the midnight-hued pastry flour with bantha butter instead of zaffa oil since it was less risky. Deciding she would not serve something bland and mediocre for what could be the last meal she ever cooked, she chose the oil.
Zaffa oil was introduced to the new Star Wars canon in "But What Does He Eat?," a short story by S.A. Chakraborty published in the 2020 anthology book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, zaffa oil was mentioned in the story "A Very Special Meal," written by Peter M.
