The Y-wing project was seen as vital to the Galactic Republic's victory in the Clone Wars. The project oversaw the development of the new BTL-A4 Y-wing starfighter, the first model in the BTL-series of assault starfighter-bombers. While undergoing testing at Koensayr Manufacturing's Bormus testing facility, Jedi General Anakin Skywalker requested several of the bombers being tested at the facility for an assault on the Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Malevolence. However, his request was refused by Gran Senator Ask Aak who was critical of the Jedi for not having saved his predecessor Aks Moe from an assassination attempt. Despite this, Skywalker took the ships he needed regardless, using them to form Shadow Squadron.
