Vac-head anthem

A vac-head anthem was a song sung by the "vac-heads," the TIE fighter pilots who flew "in the black," or in the vacuum of space, for the Imperial Navy. Shortly after the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin, in 0 ABY, the pilots of Nashtah Squadron, a squadron of "ground-hogs," or pilots that flew in planetary atmosphere, were sent on a mission to Portocari, where the pilot Muller was injured and the pilots Barsay, Riggs, and Chan were killed in combat with rebel fighters. After the battle, the surviving squadron members were present at the Zero Angle cantina. In an attempt to blow off steam after the mission, the pilots Huck Trompo and Sully Olvar began to sing a ground-hog anthem in an attempt to goad the pilots of Banshee Squadron into a fight. Banshee Squadron responded by beginning to sing a vac-head anthem, and the situation devolved into a fight.

A vac-head anthem appeared in the canon short story "Last Call at the Zero Angle," written by Jason Fry. The story was published in Star Wars Insider 156 on March 10, 2015.
