The droidsmith was first mentioned, albeit indirectly, in the 2019 activity book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Book and Magnetic Playset written by Sally Little. D-O's droidsmith was incorrectly identified as Babu Frik in the reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition.
The film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Frik and D-O were in fact unacquainted and the reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo, established that the droidsmith was killed by Ochi prior to the events of the film, further cementing that they were a separate individual from Frik.
