Unidentified Sarafur species

At one point by 26,000 BBY, a Killik Sith warrior took up refuge in the city, ultimately becoming entombed in a building that the native inhabitants had used for bathing in sulfurous mineral waters. Eventually, eons before the reign of the Galactic Empire, the Sarafur species went extinct, and the natives' buildings turned into ruins.

The species' homeworld, Sarafur

Eons before the reign of the Galactic Empire, a sentient species resided on Sarafur, a planet in the Moddell sector of the Outer Rim Territories. At some point, Sarafur had become tidally locked, with some later astronomers theorizing that the process had occurred so quickly that the planet's sea—the seabed of which became the Krasho Salt Rifts region—had evaporated in as quickly as several years or even just months.

The species built many unusual structures, some of them multiple stories high, that were carved out of gigantic blocks of stone such as basalt and sandstone and that came to rest in the border region between the illuminated and dark sides of Sarafur's surface. At the edge of what would eventually be the Krasho Salt Rifts, Sarafur's inhabitants established a bustling city. One of the settlement's buildings housed a building where the natives bathed in sulfurous mineral waters. The area also housed an arena, and, according to some later treasure hunters, among the ruins on Sarafur was a crypt of a deceased alien ruler, as well.

Sarafur, the homeworld of its native species, served as a colony world of the hive-minded, insectoid Killiks before their disappearance from the known galaxy by 30,000 BBY. Between approximately that date and 25,200 BBY, Sarafur also fell under the control of the Infinite Empire of the Rakata species.

When a Killik Sith warrior fled persecution on the Core Worlds planet Alsakan long before Humans settled there between 27,000 BBY and 26,000 BBY, he took up refuge on Sarafur, in the city of its inhabitants. When the Sith died, he was entombed in the building housing the mineral water baths. At some point, long before the time of the Galactic Empire, the species that lived on Sarafur became extinct, with the structures it had built ultimately becoming collapsed ruins.

Behind the scenes

The Sarafur species was introduced in the ninth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine, published on February 22, 2002. Within the magazine, the species was mentioned in the source article "Endor and the Moddell Sector" as well as the roleplaying adventure "Race for the Tessent," both being written for use with Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game.
