Two years after the events of Crimson Empire II: Council of Blood, Kir Kanos, working as a bounty hunter tracks down a criminal named Lem Krarr, wanted for murder. A substantial bounty has been placed on Krarr's head; ten thousand credits alive and six thousand dead. Capturing Krarr alive, Kanos delivers him to authorities where he is informed that Krarr was wanted for murdering fourteen younglings. Upon hearing this, Kanos changes his heart, kills Krarr, and takes six thousand credits. All the while, Kanos contemplates his revenge on Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo and wonders if he will see Mirith Sinn again.
Meanwhile, Sinn is restless on Coruscant, believing that Kanos is still at large and is dangerous as ever. Organa Solo walks in, trying to ease Sinn's worries and saying that she should stay focused if she intends to take the job as Solo's chief of security.
