The First Jedi was the first Star Wars film of the project to be helmed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The film was to be focused on exploring how the Jedi Order began, why it began, and exploring the first lightsaber. Benioff and Weiss confirmed that Lucasfilm ultimately passed on the project and was not interested. Despite this, a Star Wars film by James Mangold is set to explore the dawn of the Jedi. Benioff and Weiss abandoned the title they were working on when their longtime friend Rian Johnson titled his film The Last Jedi.
