The Corkscrew (Akkadese Maelstrom)

The Corkscrew was a location inside the turbulent Outer Rim Territories region known as the Akkadese Maelstrom. It connected two parts of the Channel hyperspace route and contained carbonbergs as well as the area known as the Thunderhead. At some point by 10 BBY, the spice runner Tryphon Leo had traveled through the Corkscrew, while the pilot BoShek hoped around ten years later to make a record-setting Kessel Run transportation trip by passing through that area.

Description

The Corkscrew was an area of space situated within the Akkadese Maelstrom, a region of the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice consisting of ionized gas, dust clouds, water vapor, ammonia, and planet-sized carbonbergs as well as gravity wells. Carbonbergs in particular were present in the Corkscrew, as was the location known as the Thunderhead. The Corkscrew had the shape of a corridor that connected two segments of the meandering hyperspace route known as the Channel, which connected the interior of the Akkadese Maelstrom with the wider galaxy.

The spice runner Tryphon Leo once took their freighter, the Lessu Dancer, through the Corkscrew, where they scraped the starship's hull on carbonbergs—an event that Leo later boastfully noted at some point by 10 BBY in the book eventually known as the Smuggler's Guide. The freelance pilot BoShek also mentioned the Corkscrew in the same book, recording his hope of using money acquired through a successful participation in the upcoming 0 ABY Dragon Void Run starship race to fund a record-setting Kessel Run—a trip made while transporting valuable coaxium fuel or spice from the Akkadese Maelstrom world Kessel out of the Maelstrom—by passing through the Thunderhead. Ultimately, BoShek was not successful at the Dragon Void Run, however, forcing him to seek other ways to earn money. At some point between 10 BBY and approximately 1 ABY, the barkeep known as Midnight included a map of the Akkadese Maelstrom with the Corkscrew noted on it in a book they were writing.

Behind the scenes

The Corkscrew was mentioned in the 2018 book Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor, authored by Jason Fry and illustrated by Sam Gilbey.
