Taung were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the sixty-first issue of Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon, published around March 2, 2016.
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Taung were the original species of Mandalorians. They first appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi — The Sith War comic book series, and were identified as Taung in the Star Wars Insider article "The History of the Mandalorians." That article elaborated the Taung as the precursor of the Mandalorian culture.
