Commander Tarkus was a Human male of the reconstituted Sith Empire during the Galactic War. In 3642 BBY he was present on Hoth, making an arrangement with Kandhar of the White Maw pirate gang to retrieve a cloaking device the leader of the gang supposedly possessed. Their meeting was interrupted by a smuggler captain who planned to kill Kandhar to gain the trust of Shai Tenna. The smuggler chose to expose Kandhar's ties to Imperials to his men, who killed Tarkus, angry at being betrayed.
