Plot summary

On the forest moon of Endor, Admiral Ackbar oversees a meeting of the Alliance where reports from different worlds indicate that there may still be well-organized Imperial forces in the galaxy, and that the Alliance fleet must remain ready. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker is tormented by nightmares wherein he faces Vader removing his mask. Then a lone starfighter lands near the Alliance base. The pilot introduces himself as Denin, sole survivor of the royal family of the planet Naldar. Denin wants Skywalker to teach him the way of the Force so he can free his home planet. Luke, however, is unsure that he can teach the lost arts of the Force.

Admiral Ackbar decides he cannot afford to send ships to Naldar, but he does approve to send a reconnaissance force, including Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, Denin, and Luke's student Barney, the latter hoping to find his lost childhood friend Flint on Naldar. Before takeoff Luke has a new dream wherein Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and his father Anakin Skywalker reveal that the images of Vader he has experienced in his nightmares was his interpretation of a dark power. Then another black-armored dark knight appears in Luke's vision instead of Darth Vader.

When the group arrives at Naldar, TIE fighters force the Millennium Falcon to crash on the planet's surface. There, as the party searches the ruins of a huge battle, they are surrounded by Imperial stormtroopers. Their leader, the same dark knight as in Luke's vision, is revealed as Barney's old friend, Flint, now turned to the dark side. As Luke engages Flint in a lightsaber duel, Leia and the droids find documents proving that prince Denin of Naldar died several years ago. When confronted with this information, Denin admits that he is in fact is Denin's twin sister, Vila who, after Denin's death, took up his life, and his dream to be a Jedi.

Just as the group rejoins with Luke to help him in his duel, a stormtrooper sniper hits Luke, ending the fight. Barney confronts Flint, telling him that the very empire he now serves was the cause of his mother's death, giving Flint second thoughts about his dark path.

When the stormtrooper sniper hears this, he aims his blaster at his former commander and informs his fellow troopers of Flint's betrayal. But before he manages to execute Flint, Vila charges the stormtrooper with Luke's lightsaber, blocking the shot with her body. Now realizing the damage he has done, Flint uses a destruction device to annihilate his troops to prevent further strife on the planet. Dying in Luke's arms, Vila finds solace in acting as a true Jedi and passes away to the netherworld of the Force. There she meets her brother and Master Yoda, with whom she finally completes her dream to learn the ways of the Force.
