Star Wars (1977) 28

Star Wars 28 is the twenty-eighth issue of the Legends comic book series Star Wars. It was written by Archie Goodwin, illustrated by Carmine Infantino, and first published on July 24, 1979 by Marvel Comics. The issue features the story "What Ever Happened to Jabba the Hut?," in which Han Solo and Chewbacca evade Jabba's enforcers and dangerous stone mites.

In Star Wars 28, Jabba is depicted as a Nimbanel. Later works would retcon this depiction as the character of Mosep Binneed, one of Jabba's underlings who operated with his name.

Publisher's summary

Jabba the Hut is looking to get his payment from Han and Chewie, through deadly force if necessary.

Plot summary

A rough re-entry of the Millennium Falcon from hyperspace prompts Han Solo and Chewbacca to land on the Mid Rim world Orleon, a smuggler's hideout constantly besieged by rain. As Han and Chewbacca make repairs, the Wookiee notes that the cavern they had sheltered the Falcon in is leaking.

Han and Chewbacca's attention is diverted by the arrival of Jabba the Hut. Jabba's forces assault the cavern to drive Han and Chewbacca into the open, but the two smugglers are faced with another problem: the entire cavern ceiling is infested with stone mites, living weapons from the Clone Wars that can eat through anything.

The stone mites pour onto the Falcon, and Han and Chewbacca barely make it on board. At Han's suggestion, Chewbacca uses the Falcons laser cannons to blast away the cavern roof. The Falcon escapes through the blasted surface and leaves Orleon, confronting Jabba the Hut's ship, the Voidraker, in orbit.

Through transmissions from the Voidraker, Han and Chewbacca discover that the stone mites have infested Jabba's ship. As the only survivor, Jabba pleads with Han for sanctuary on the Falcon. Jabba jets over in his flight suit, but Han's "payment" for allowing him sanctuary (on the ship, not in it) is that his and Chewbacca's debts are canceled.

Continuity

The official StarWars.com Databank entry for Jabba the Hutt recounts the events of Star Wars 28 and states that "While this particular version of these events didn't happen, it is still possible that the Orleon incident did occur."

The 2014 article "Red Five," published in Star Wars Insider 149, established that the "Jabba" in Star Wars was in fact Jabba's Nimbanel accountant, Mosep Binneed, who sometimes used Jabba's name in interactions.
