Speaker's staff

The Speaker's staff was a long wooden staff wielded by the Vice Chair of the Galactic Republic Senate. It had crisscrossing carved lines running down its length, and was capped by a dull golden statuette of Sistros Nevet, one of the Four Sages of Dwartii.

During the proclamation of the New Order—when Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine announced the transformation of the Republic into the First Galactic Empire—the staff was held by the current Vice Chair, a Chagrian named Mas Amedda.

After he became Grand Vizier of the Galactic Empire, Amedda continued to wield a similar scepter. When the Galactic Emperor held a briefing, Amedda would bang his staff on the floor as a sign that the meeting should commence.

The Speaker's staff first appeared in the 2005 prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, and was identified canonically in the 2016 reference book Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded, written by Pablo Hidalgo.
