Sonic scalpels were medical tools intended and could be used during emergency field surgery. The device was used to cut away dead tissue, a necessary procedure for some wounds to prevent developing a necrotic infection. Sonic scalpels were included in medpacs, including Biotech Industries' FastFlesh medpac.
Ula Vii used a sonic scalpel to clear away the fused flesh and plastoid that had been left behind after Larin Moxla had four fingers severed and cauterized by a Sith lightsaber.
Lalu Morwan used a sonic scalpel to treat Han Solo's injured arm aboard the Millennium Falcon.
