Solem was brutally subjugated by the Galactic Empire as a demonstration of power following the loss of the first Death Star at the Battle of Yavin. Imperial Governors Yolan and Malvander Bren ruled Solem from an Imperial stronghold in the city of G'ai Solem during the Galactic Civil War. However, Yolan realized the evils of the Empire, and left his position to join the resistance.
Malvander's campaign to suppress the rebellion on Solem was violent. His methods left 10 people dead for every Imperial casualty, bringing total destruction to much of Solem. Solem's economy was destroyed by the costly war, and left Malvander able to gather up only 10,000 of the 50,000 credits he owed to Boba Fett.
