Slime

Slime was a substance that was secreted by some species in the galaxy, notably by Hutts such as Jabba the Hutt. The term "slime" and its associated words were used as insults.

Description

Slime was a substance that was secreted by some species in the galaxy, such as the sarlacc. It was a sticky ooze reminiscent of mucus.

Slime of sentient species

The dianoga were slimy, sentient cephalopods. One such dianoga was the Force-sensitive female called Omi who lived in a garbage compactor on the Galactic Empire's first Death Star until its destruction during the Battle of Yavin. The slug-like Hutt crime lords were regarded as slimy in their behavior, and they were known to secrete slime. The scaly skin of the reptilian Trandoshans was slimy.

Creature secretions

Slime pods, which were bloated with gas and floated in the swamps of Nal Hutta, were consumed by Hutts. The Dagobah swamp slug secreted a saccharine slime that was edible and used to make the Dagobah Slug Slinger cocktail. Joopas, enormous worm-like creatures that lived beneath the surface on Seelos, had a slimy tongue that they used to capture prey and drag it underground.

As an insult

It was considered insulting and offensive to compare things to slime. In 32 BBY, Darth Sidious referred to Neimoidian and Trade Federation Droid Control Ship captain Daultay Dofine as a "stunted slime" whom he did not want in his sight.

The Huttese word "sleemo" was used as an insult about beings. Prior to the Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY, the Dug podracer pilot Sebulba insulted his enslaved competitor Anakin Skywalker, who responded by calling Sebulba sleemo. In 22 BBY, the human bounty hunter Jango Fett fatally shot Zam Wesell with a saberdart; Wesell realized who had killed her and referred to Fett as sleemo as she died.

In 3 ABY, Luke Skywalker called the swamp planet Dagobah and Jedi Master Yoda's adoptive home a "slimy mudhole," which Yoda treated that as an offensive remark. When old smuggling friends Lando Calrissian and Han Solo reunited in Cloud City on Bespin, Calrissian insultingly addressed Solo as a "slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler."

Jabba the Hutt, "the slimiest thing in the galaxy"

Jabba Desilijic Tiure, a muscular and skeletonless Hutt, was known to be slimy, and he was said to be the slimiest thing in the galaxy. In 4 ABY, his slimy attentions were rejected by Oola, a Twi'lek dancer who was enslaved by Jabba, and by Leia Organa, who ultimately killed him. Jabba's metaphorical and literal sliminess were insulted by Han Solo when the Hutt offered the smuggler the opportunity to plea for his life.

Behind the scenes

In the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, Jabba the Hutt's slimy sound effects were made in part by using a bowl of melted cheese.

The educational toy company Uncle Milton released its Star Wars Science Jabba the Hutt Slime Lab in 2018.
