Saarn was used for military training by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. It was later a remote surveillance outpost for the New Republic.
The planet was attacked at the beginning of the Thrawn campaign. The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Stormhawk executed a hit-and-fade attack on Saarn, wiping out New Republic personnel. Grand Admiral Thrawn's forces set up a listening post there to protect the movement of the Imperial Navy.
