SSP05 hyperdrive


The SSP05 hyperdrive was a model of Class 2.0 hyperdrive twice the size of a YT-1300's stock engine, manufactured by Isu-Sim and used in starships to allow hyperspace travel.

The SS05 hyperdrive was an advanced Class 2.0 hyperdrive engine manufactured by Isu-Sim which could be equipped to a YT-1300 light freighter. It could further be upgraded to as fast as a Class 0.5, albeit with illegal military-rating hardware. It consisted of a primary processor case and the hypermatter reactor which powered the hyperdrive engines via two horizontal booster power cables. The assembly was surrounded with diagnostic computers and Rendili Hyperworks transpacitors.

Inside the processor were five stacked energy stabilizer plates connected with each other via several spatial interconnect conduits. These plates were lined with charge planes which distributed hypermatter through them via thin effect channels and a single null quantum field stabilizer in their center. Underneath the plates was the main coaxium-coated hypermatter reaction chamber which was built around the power core's energizer ring. An additional ring of secondary processors with paralight relays was responsible for translating the commands received from the ship's navicomputer into a set of corresponding reactions within the hyperdrive, which itself was connected with the navicomputer via secure data lines.

The hyperdrive engines received the hypermatter-charged ion emissions from the reactor via the booster power lines which were constantly monitored by the ship's computer to ensure a risk-free hyperspace travel. A hyperspace motivator was also connected to the ship's main and navigation computers to monitor and collect sensor and navigational data to determine jump thrust, adjust engine performance during the jump and safely return the ship to realspace. Upon calibrating the data, the motivator initiated a lightspeed thrust by igniting the hypermatter-charged particles via small horizontal boosters; the amount of thrust was regulated via alluvial dampers which moved a servomotor-controlled plate to block the ion particles.

The modified YT-1300 light freighter known as the Millennium Falcon was equipped with a customized SSP05 that had been jury-rigged "Vandangante style" to Class 0.5. It was installed by Lando Calrissian to replace the original Avatar-10 hyperdrive and illegally upgraded with military hardware which more than doubled its size and upgraded its rating to 1.0. After Han Solo won the vessel from Calrissian on a high-stakes game of sabacc, he further modified the hyperdrive to a Class 0.5 rating, making it double as fast as an Imperial-class Star Destroyer and one of the fastest hyperspace-capable vessels in the galaxy.

Under his later ownership of the Falcon, the junk dealer Unkar Plutt failed to maintain the drive while he kept the vessel on the planet Jakku, leading to an energy flux in the motivator, which bled back into Quadex power core and caused a surge. This triggered a faulty signal to be sent to the fuel distributor which meant liquid metal fuel flooded the distributor's propulsion tank into the ship's auxiliary systems, overheating various components and causing a rupture that would allow the fuel to fill the ship as a poisonous gas. When the Falcon was stolen by the scavenger Rey, the former-stormtrooper Finn, and the astromech droid BB-8 around thirty years after the Battle of Endor, Rey managed to fix the issue, before the vessel was captured by two of its former owners, the smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The SSP05 hyperdrive was first pictured and identified in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Incredible Cross-Sections, a reference book released in 2015 in conjunction with the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, in which the hyperdrive was indirectly mentioned. The reference book was written by Jason Fry and illustrated by Kemp Remillard.
