SRB42 sublight engine

Description

The SRB42 was a model of sublight engine manufactured by Girodyne for the Corellian Engineering Corporation and equipped to the company's YT-1300 light freighters. It was considered to be one of the most capable freighter engines in existence. To power the sublight drive, the engine was connected to a fusion reactor which broke down fuel into charged particles which were then ignited inside a primary combustion chamber and after being compressed, they were directed towards the final stage engine unit.

SRB42 final stage units utilized a high-powered turbine to accelerate the energized particles towards the reactant injectors which pushed them inside the stabilizer chamber. There, the thrust was stabilized enough to be re-ignited inside the high-pressure afterburner, and with the occasional push from the ship's hyperdrive boost pumps the particles were shot through the nine exhaust nozzles. The resulting energy created hurls from the vessel, providing thrust which was then directed via thrust vectors allowing the ship to change trajectories ans during hyperspace jumps was controlled by a servomotor-powered plate which could be lowered to block particle emissions. The exhaust from the engine was mildly radioactive and extremely hot, capable of instantly incinerating built-up debris, allowing CEC to categorize it as 'self-cleaning'.

The engine was manufactured out of a chromium-titanium alloy to make it resistant to radiation and inter-dimensional shift stress. Their versatile build allowed YT-1300 owners to add a SubLight Acceleration Motor (SLAM) if they so wished, a modification which allowed spare power to be redirected from other systems to the engines in a time of need. For this purpose there were supports for power cables carefully wrapped around the pressurized engine sections to transfer SLAM power to their every component, while fuel supply lines were scattered around the boost pumps and exhaust nozzles to provide additional fuel as needed.
