Rodian Splice

A Rodian Splice was an alcoholic beverage created with several toxic substances that had to be mixed in precise proportions to prevent the drink from being lethal when consumed by most species. Han Solo, a human male smuggler, enjoyed the cocktail and ordered it on multiple occasions. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs, however, was afraid to prepare it or consume it despite including a recipe in The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Description

Rodian Splices were alcoholic beverages created with multiple toxic ingredients. If the cocktail was not prepared with perfect proportions of the poisonous components, it would become lethal for most species to consume; for instance, an Artiodac or a human could survive drinking it only if mixed correctly. The drink was highly intoxicating and had a strong flavor that many beings enjoyed despite the risk of death. The completed cocktail could appear as a solid color, such as green or orange, or with black, white, and orange layers. Part of the cocktail's name was shared with the planet Rodia and its native Rodian species.

History

Rodian Splices were typically enjoyed by smugglers such as Han Solo.

The drink was enjoyed by the human male smuggler Han Solo, but he often could not find a cantina that served a satisfactory one. Between 1 ABY and 3 ABY, at a bar on the Outer Rim location Barnahof, Solo ordered but was unable to consume a Rodian Splice due to the arrival of a stormtrooper patrol. The Galactic Empire was searching for Solo and his Rebel Alliance cohorts Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker after the three had gone into hiding following the Battle of Mako-Ta. Solo abandoned his drink order when they fled from the Imperials.

When the trio found refuge at Thane Markona's estate on the isolationist moon Hubin, the Thane's butler droid MK-1 served them drinks while they sat in the estate grounds awaiting an audience with Markona. The droid mixed a large container of Rodian Splice at Solo's request, but it made substitutions for some of the poisonous ingredients due to the risk of producing a beverage that was not safe for human consumption. Solo was content to relax and enjoy his drink, but Skywalker had grown impatient and declined Solo's recommendation of the cocktail.

Rodian Splices were served at the bar Sennifer's Beam and Balance on Boxer Point Station in the Janx system in 21 ABY. While the alien mercenary Cerensco met with the assassin Ochi of Bestoon, Cerensco drank a shot glass full of Rodian Splice in a single gulp.

In 34 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs published his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, and he included a recipe for the cocktail along with multiple warnings about its dangers. His description of the beverage characterized it as the type that would be ordered by smugglers who were desperate and had something they wished to prove. Although the cookbook was a collection of his favorite dishes, Tuggs admitted to his personal fear about preparing or consuming the potent and potentially fatal Rodian Splice.

Behind the scenes

Rodian Splice first appeared in Star Wars 56.

Rodian Splices first appeared in the fifty-sixth issue of the Star Wars comic-book series, which was published by Marvel Comics on November 7, 2018 and written by Kieron Gillen with art by Andrea Broccardo. Its physical traits were concealed by a container in that issue, but the beverage was depicted as green in the subsequent fifty-seventh issue, which was released on November 21 and written by Gillen with art by Angel Unzueta.

The 2019 recipe book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which was written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak, includes a recipe for the cocktail. Equal amounts of coffee liqueur, Irish cream liqueur, and either bourbon or whiskey are poured into a glass in that order to create a tricolored layered drink.
