The Rim Faction argued that the Republic's government institutions on its capital planet Coruscant did not understand the best interests of planets such as Ryloth. During the Separatist Crisis, several members of the faction had seceded from the Republic and its senate to the Separatist Alliance, which eventually led to the outbreak of the Clone Wars between the two governments.
The Rim Faction was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars Roleplaying product series. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Rim Faction was introduced in the 2001 novel Cloak of Deception by James Luceno. It was subsequently identified by name in Luceno's 2012 novel Darth Plagueis.
