R-3PO was a background character in The Empire Strikes Back, where he is in Echo Base shortly before the Battle of Hoth. He also appears in the non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in which he has been reprogrammed as a droid serving the First Order. His name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity via the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, and was brought into the new canon via Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know. R-3PO was portrayed by Chris Parsons
