Peter Suschitzky


Peter Suschitzky (born July 25, 1941) is a British cinematographer who was born in Warsaw to fellow cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky. He was the director of photography on Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, having served in the same role for previous films, such as 1975's The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Notably, Suschitzsky later worked as the director of photography on David Cronenberg's later films. Suschitzky's work is near universally regarded as among the best cinematography in the world, praised for its sculptorly lighting, vibrant color coordination and rich camerawork.

According to Suschitzky, George Lucas wanted him as a director of photography on Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope after first choice Geoffrey Unsworth proved unavailable, but the studio was reluctant to go with someone inexperienced and eventually assigned Gilbert Taylor for the job. Lucas later hired him to work on The Empire Strikes Back.
