After having been ruled as a despotism for years, in 37 BBY a group of young liberals overthrew the government, resulting in a disorganized democracy. However, in 22 BBY, just before the start of the Clone Wars, the Church of Infinite Perception launched a counter-coup, installing a theocracy. Due to its nebulous affiliation with the Galactic Republic, the Republic could do nothing to stop the bloody revolt.
