Penumbra-1 shattersprite

The Penumbra-1 shattersprite was a vessel that, according to legend, was used by the early Jedi. In stories, they were used to attack the Ordu Aspectu citadel before fleeing as the station disappeared. Later, while part of the Accresker Penal Legion in 1 ABY, Chelli found the gundeck of a Penumbra-1 aboard Accresker Jail. She believed the derelict had been aboard the prison complex for centuries and suspected that it housed Force-sensitive relics.

The Penumbra-1 shattersprite was a bulky starship with two thick wings, equipped with weaponry and a small sublight engine each, and two larger engines at the back of the fuselage. The vessels also had a single-seated cockpit.

History

The Penumbra-1 shattersprite was used by the early Jedi, as told by legends. In stories about the Jedi splinter group Ordu Aspectu, many of the starships were part of an attack on the splinter group that had led to the disappearance of their citadel.

Many centuries before the Galactic Civil Wars, a Jedi who flew a Penumbra-1 shattersprite was possessed by the highly infectious fungus known as the Gundravian hookspores. The Jedi soon died, and his ship crashed, later becoming a part of the wreckage-prison Accresker Jail. In 1 ABY, Chelli Aphra, who served in the prison's penal legion, attempted to escape the wreckage-prison when she stumbled upon the Penumbra-1 shattersprite and the corpse of its Jedi pilot. After later freezing the Gundravian hookspores, she was able to plunder the wrecked vessel and steal the Jedi's lightsaber.

Behind the scenes

The Penumbra-1 shattersprite first appeared through flashbacks in the second issue of the 2016 comic series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, written by Kieron Gillen, pencilled by Kev Walker and released on December 21 of that year. The ship's name was identified in the twenty-first issue of the series, written by Simon Spurrier, pencilled again by Walker and released on July 25, 2018.
