A parabelt was a propulsion harness system that was strapped around the mid-section of its wearer. Attached to the anterior side of the harness were small, twin repulsorlift engines that allowed the wearer to fly short distances within a breathable atmosphere. Its form and function were similar to that of a life-jet.
In 3 ABY, Princess Leia used a parabelt to infiltrate the smelting plant located on the planet, Golrath. Imperial officer Lieutenant Mils Giel trapped Leia inside of the base's reactor core and held her at gunpoint. Leia activated her parabelt's rocket engines, distracting Giel long enough for her to effect her escape.
