Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber

This lightsaber was powered by a diatium power cell, which was surrounded by the notched hand grip. During his Mission to Pijal, the kyber crystal which powered the blade of the weapon was briefly swapped with a kohlen crystal. This ended up saving his life, as such a blade was able to cut through armor which was similarly powered by kohlen crystals.

Behind the scenes

Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. It was first identified by the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.

After director George Lucas showed Ewan McGregor, the actor who played Kenobi in the prequels, around the studio, they went to the props-making department, and the prop master showed him a chest of lightsaber props. McGregor then got to choose which lightsaber he would use in the film. The first lightsaber work he did was when he trained for the duel against Darth Maul. He thought it was an amazing thing to be part of, and he found the duels to be very intricate and fast.
