The type was named for the nightdragon, a creature known to the Chiss. Around 19 and 18 BBY, Admiral Ar'alani commanded the Vigilant, a Nightdragon man-of-war and the largest vessel in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, as a part of Picket Force Six.
