Nek

The nek was a non-sentient predatory species found in the galaxy. Characterized by their squat physiques, yellow fur, sharp teeth, and harsh barking, neks could run at great speeds, and they were considered dangerous by humans. Despite their ferocity, neks were able to be trained. On the planet Lothal, a nek owner commanded his creatures by whistling, and they helped him guard an orchard. Around 6 BBY, while visiting the orchard, Imperial students Zare Leonis, Beck Ollet, and Merei Spanjaf were attacked by the neks, before the creatures were called off by the guard.

In 0 BBY, shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Rebel pilots Col Takbright and Luke Skywalker had a brief discussion, and when fellow pilot John D. Branon persistently asked Takbright what Skywalker had said, Takbright mentally compared Branon to a nek with a bone. Around 4 ABY, in the early months after the Battle of Endor, when a Twi'lek named Orgadomo Dokura followed ex-Imperial Sinjir Rath Velus, Velus compared Dokura to a lost nek.

Behind the scenes

In the Star Wars canon, neks first appeared in the junior novel Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, which was written by Jason Fry, published by Disney–Lucasfilm Press, and released on October 21, 2014. In Star Wars Legends, neks debuted in the 1991 comic book Dark Empire 1, written by Tom Veitch and illustrated by Cam Kennedy.
