Galactic conflicts are fought on the surface of the planets, but also, especially, in their orbits and in deep space. Since the species of the galaxy have been able to travel between systems, they have learned to rely on increasingly powerful and better armed ships to face any adversity they might encounter. Turbolasers, impact missiles or proton torpedoes are elements that can not be missing in almost any ship, especially if it is of military rank. But weapons are not everything: having a good hyperdrive, powerful sublight engines or a resistant deflector shield generator can mean the difference between living to travel another day or losing the ship (or something else) in a confrontation in space.
