Myrmitrices (singular myrmitrix) were adolescent females of the Melitto species. Whenever a Melitto hive grew too large to operate efficiently, several myrmitrices struck out their own with warrior followers and battled until the winner became a new queen, gaining the right to establish her own hive. The warrior followers of a defeated myrmitrix all became ronin, a category of hiveless outcasts.
The name "myrmitrix" was inspired by the Ancient Greek word μύρμηξ ("ant"), although Fry confessed his starting point probably was the "myrmidon" from the first edition of the roleplaying game rulebook Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
