Music boxes were a type of device that, if opened, would play music. Sometimes music boxes contained recordings instead of music. Their name came from the fact that they were shaped like boxes, and could be opened as such.
Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan owned a music box which played the Alderaanian lullaby Mirrorbright that she kept in her keepsake chest. Her adoptive father Bail Organa left a message for her in the music box telling Leia about her biological parents, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala Naberrie, along with her twin brother, Luke Skywalker.
