Mulatan was a guardian world that served as a gateway into the Bootana Hutta, which contained the throneworlds of the clans of the Hutt species. Mulatan was dedicated to the defense of those worlds, and a number of Hutt warships, a rare sight elsewhere in Hutt Space, always surrounded Mulatan, with outsiders being advised not to linger there. Mulatan was also regularly patrolled by the fleet of Troonol, a commander of the Hutt Qunaalac clan.
Mulatan was first mentioned in The Essential Atlas, a 2009 reference book co-authored by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, which placed it in grid square S-10. It was subsequently described as a world the 2015 roleplaying sourcebook Lords of Nal Hutta, published for use with Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying system.
