Middish Sunblade was created by author Joe Schreiber for his 2010 novel Red Harvest. Schreiber modeled the character after Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J. D. Salinger's 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. However, he cut Sunblade from the final draft of the novel, as he found him to be a whiny character whom the other characters couldn't stand.
