Michaela Coel (born Michaela-Moses Ewuraba O Boakye-Collison, on October 1, 1987) is a British actress and screenwriter who portrayed a Resistance monitor in Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. She is best known for playing the lead role in the British sitcom series Chewing Gum (2015–2017), which she also created and wrote; and for creating and starring in the 2020 British comedy-drama series I May Destroy You. She is also known for playing Shania Lowry in the 2017 Black Mirror episode "USS Callister," the main character of the 2018 drama series Black Earth Rising, and Aneka in the 2022 superhero film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The actress spent a few days on the UK set of The Last Jedi filming her role. In an interview prior to the release of the film, Coel spoke about her role and refused to call it a cameo, saying that she merely sat on a spaceship and said just three words, and was convinced that her role would end up on the cutting room floor. However, Coel enjoyed the experience because it was Star Wars.
