Lieda Mothma was a female born to the Human Chandrilan Imperial Senator Mon Mothma during the Imperial Period and the early years of the Rebellion, of which Mon was a founder. A member of the Mothma family, Lieda had a Human brother named Jobin and was the granddaughter of Tanis Mothma, governor of Hanna City on the planet Chandrila, and her spouse, a Republic arbiter-general. Having a daughter did not slow Mon's aspirations for the Rebellion against the Empire down, although she wished she could retire from service and devote herself to Lieda.

Just as the Battle of Hoth commenced in 3 ABY, Jobin created a holographic message to his mother in which he told Mon to send Lieda his love and inform her that he would write as soon as he could. Jobin was killed by Imperial forces in the battle, and his message did not reach his mother until 4 ABY, as she prepared to deliver a briefing for the upcoming Battle of Endor.

Emperor Palpatine was killed in the battle, and Mon became Chief Councilor of the Empire's successor state: the New Republic. Sometime afterward, Lieda was in convalescence on the planet New Alderaan, where she was the only person who saw past Mon's confident surface and recognized how much her years of service had cost her, although Lieda also saw a new resolve in her mother. After the Almanian Uprising in 17 ABY, Lieda joined her mother in Mon's main home on the planet Coruscant to have a quiet life until Mon's peaceful death in 24 ABY.

Behind the scenes

In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Mon Mothma's daughter was first mentioned in the Dark Empire Sourcebook, written by Michael Allen Horne and published in 1993 by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. Her first name of Lieda was confirmed in the 2002 reference book The New Essential Guide to Characters by Daniel Wallace.

While Lieda Mothma never made a full appearance in a Legends story, the new Star Wars canon introduced Leida Mothma (pictured) in the streaming series Andor.

In the "Ask the Master" section of the Star Wars Insider magazine's 82nd issue, which began shipping to subscribers on May 17, 2005, author Pablo Hidalgo was asked about Lieda Mothma and who her father was. Hidalgo described Lieda as a mysterious character and commented that the name Lieda Mothma had not yet been used canonically. He stated that this information made room for the possibility that Lieda was born out of wedlock, as no source had confirmed whether Mon had married. The name Lieda Mothma was then confirmed in her brother Jobin's entry in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.

Leida Mothma, a version of the character with the spelling of her first name altered, debuted in the new Star Wars canon in "The Axe Forgets," the fifth episode of the Disney+ series Andors first season, which premiered on October 5, 2022. She was portrayed by actress Bronte Carmichael. The accompanying episode guide published on StarWars.com acknowledged the character's origins in the Dark Empire Sourcebook and the fact that she had not been previously featured in any story.
